Release Date: May 25th 2012

'Paths’, the new album from Olan Mill, sees the unashamedly romantic music of Alex Smalley and Svitlana Samoylenko moving away from piano based vignettes towards broader compositions of processed guitar, pipe organ and violin. The album displays a striking economy of instrumentation that is the logical progression from their earnest neo-classical debut ‘Pine’, released on Serein in 2010.

The focus of ‘Paths’ is the manipulation of boundaries, a direction embarked on more by necessity than choice - reconciling the ambition of an orchestra with the limitations of a duo. The restraint in sound stems from a foray into the previously unexplored realm of live performance - the pair also admitting they were “supporting some serious piano dentists and we were never up to their kind of surgery, so it was as much a white flag maneuver as it was artistic decision”.

‘Paths’ represents a growth in both sound and style, with each song possessing its own identity within the record - the exploration of both structure and composition revealing new events each time the listener delves into the immersive narrative of their communication.

The end result is a richer harmonic sound field, intended to physically move an audience as much as it aimed to devastate them emotionally. The six pieces were captured from two live performances in Bristol and Reading in late 2010, and have been sewn together from the multi-track recordings into a run of 300 limited edition 180gm vinyl mastered by Shawn Hatfield. This release is presented with a 4 panel letter pressed CD, a booklet written by Olan Mill in collaboration with Alexander Ross Petersen, limited edition 12x12 prints, A2 poster and interconnected artwork by Jurgen Heckel. All collated in the characteristic hand stamped, sealed and numbered Facture fashion.

Direct and melodic without the obsession of minimalism, ‘Paths’ is an honest and engaging account of both melancholy and euphoria.

Reviews:

Album of the month at Textura:

Restraint and understatement are the operative words here, as the duo constantly focuses on striking the right balance between emotional expression and economic presentation.

Artist profile at Textura:

The Silent Ballet

A Closer Listen:

There is no doubt that though Olan Mill’s overall sound is one of sobriety, pause, and deep emotional memory, it expresses a desire to connect, to break down barriers in the listener’s mind. Above all Paths is ridiculously gorgeous and cannot be missed by the lovers and poets of the listening world.

Cyclic Defrost:

The boundary separating individual components, and individual performers, dissolves, as each element merges with its neighbour, single cello lines splitting into multi-tracked doubles, overlapped triples, before uniting as one dense sound.

To Eleven:

If for whatever reason you made me pick one word to describe Olan Mill’s Path album, I’d have to go with “rich”. Rich, as Merriam-Webster defines it “full and mellow in tone and quality.” This, completely. Simple and delicate, but beautiful and nuanced. This is what I want to call modern classical.

The Liminal:

These 6 pieces are almost see-through in places, translucent washes of sound that spread broadly like the upper reaches of the atmosphere.

Beach Sloth:

‘Paths’ keeps on dragging me into its world. Maybe it is the short length of the entire album (the whole thing clocks in at about half an hour). Or perhaps it is the amount of pure love infused into these tracks. Either way, ‘Paths’ is a lovely album that truly gives a good name to the genre ‘ambient’.

Future Elements:

Profoundly beautiful. This was my initial impression of “paths” by Olan Mill. It is a profoundly beautiful merging of ambient and neo-classical instrumentation… with an elegance and grace that simply has to be experienced to be believed.

Indie Rock Mag:

Sounds Better With Reverb:

As stated in the release notes, the record intended to “physically move an audience as much as it aimed to devastate them emotionally.” Can’t get more honest than that, after hearing ‘Springs’ I say mission accomplished!

Loop:

Neo-classical music with successive sections of wind instruments, piano and field recordings, creates beautiful moments that hint at delicate images and nostalgic overtones.

Chain D.L.K:

Placid symphonic trembling of virginal strings, luminous heavenly choirs and puffed pipe organ, the kind of stuff which can act as a soundtrack for slow motion sequences.

Electronic Music Mall:

Paths is a deep immersion of shadowy, melancholy beauty: lush, emotive strings; entangled piano lines; dense processed drones.

Ambient Blog:

Olan Mill's sound is somewhat comparable to the sound of the Stars of the Lid and A Winged Victory for the Sullen and will definitely appeal to the same audience.

Music Addicted:

If you thought that Pine, debut album by Olan Mill, was lush and utterly emotive and couldn’t be more romantic, their forthcoming sophomore full-length Paths (Fac-ture) proves you wrong.

Sunday April 15th: 6pm - 10pm

St John The Baptist Crypt, Broad Street, Bristol, BS1 2EZ

We will be launching the first in a series of gigs to be held in the 14th century crypt of St John The Baptist, Bristol....

It has been a long standing dream for myself and Jess to put something like this together and we are both really excited to see it finally happen!

We have been on the look out for a unique venue for sometime now and hope you will agree that what we have discovered is truly beautiful: A gorgeous crypt built into the city walls that was used in the 14th-century as a place for travellers to offer prayers before a journey.

All tickets purchased for the event will include a limited edition letter pressed CD and digital download containing unreleased material from the artists playing on the night and a film from Antonymes. Tea and cake will also be served throughout the night free of charge. Releases from the artists will also be available to buy on the night at a discounted rate.

......................

Musically speaking the artist lineup speaks for itself and the term 'Modern Classics' seemed the most fitting title for the first Off-Key session...

The Lineup:

Rustle Of The Stars

Richard Knox lives and works in Leeds, UK and is one half of the ambient/modern classical duo Glissando, part of A-Sun Amissa, Of Thread &#38; Mist and an occasional live member of Sleepingdog (with Chantal Acda of True Bypass and Adam Wiltzie of Stars of the Lid) amongst other musical projects. He also runs Gizeh Records - an independent record label releasing music by the likes of Conquering Animal Sound, Sleepingdog, Glissando, FareWell Poetry, Fieldhead and Trespassers William.

Frederic D. Oberland lives in Paris, France. Multi-instrumentalist and founding member of the experimental film / poetry / music related project FareWell Poetry, he also composes original soundtracks for cinema (Augustin Gimel, Blacklight, Jayne Amara Ross, Hugo Verlinde, Ken Brown, Mark Tribe, Boris Lehman) and has collaborated with musicians like Gaspar Claus, Beérangère Maximin, Colin Johnco, Arborea, etc.

His debut album "The Beauty Of Doubting Yourself" was released on Home Normal in June 2011.

Olan Mill

Olan Mill recalls the ambition of an orchestra with the limitations of just a few members, utilising a sequence of effect processes their acoustic instruments become an undefined blend of voice, strings and deep bass all composed in a classical trajectory of melancholy and euphoria. In 2010 they released their debut album 'Pine' on Serien and the follow up 'Paths' is due this April on Facture.

Christoph Berg

Christoph Berg is a composer and sound artist currently living and working in Berlin, Germany. His debut album 'Paraphrases' is a collection of chamber music compositions that will see the light of day this summer through a 2 x vinyl release on Facture.

Antonymes (Film Project)

Antonymes music emerges from the adjustments and erasures where music expresses nothing but itself, from the relationship between continuity and repetition rather than of contract and interplay, from secrecy, from quietness, from pause, from thought, from emptiness, from time, from far off, from itself, from where it is set and where it is setting off to.

Ryan Teague (DJ Set)

Based in Bristol (UK), Ryan Teague is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist working in the field of electro-acoustic minimalism. ‘…For the Tired And Ill At Ease…’ is the cumulative result of several years of John McCaffrey’s shoulder to the musical grindstone; originally a member of electronica duo Clickits, McCaffrey moved from Accrington in the North West of England to Melbourne, Australia and started solo project Part Timer. His release as Scissors And Sellotape on Fac-ture follows the eponymous 2009 debut on Cotton Goods and numerous projects as both Part Timer and Upward Arrows for Moteer, Mobeer, Flau, Under The Spire and Lost Tribe Sound, including a number of solo self releases and collaborations with Nicola Hodgkinson, frequent muse Heidi Elva, multi- instrumentalist Aaron Martin and vocalist wife Danielle.

As Part Timer, McCaffrey concentrates on mixtures of delicate folk flavours and electronic augmentation. Upwards Arrows is an outlet for his drone material. Scissors And Sellotape is a different beast, an articulate mix of subtle electronic manipulation, field noise, restrained melody and maudlin texture. Recorded in 3 hours at St Mary’s Church in Thornbury, ‘…For the Tired And Ill At Ease…’ is an eleven-track deconstruction of the piano and organ pieces taken from the day, edited, resampled and stretched so comprehensively that after four weeks work even contributor Elva found them unrecognizable.

The album reflects an atheist’s fascination with the continuing hold that theology has over people – that despite years of humanistic advance, people still turn to their religion for meaning or relief from the pressures of the real world. The track titles link to this theme in more ways than one, joining on to either the beginning or end – “For The Tired And Ill At Ease…There Is No Succour”, “It’s A Long Slog…For The Tired And Ill At Ease”, “ For The Tired And Ill At Ease…I Say Get Used To It”.

“I think people see all kinds of things in religion…in some ways it’s whatever you need it to be. You can project your fears, hopes, or conceptions of justice on to it, and find some validating stream of thought.“ John McCaffrey

Listeners with sharp ears may recognize the track “Healing Touch” from the Fluid/Hibernate compilation ‘Kanshin’, and those familiar with this and previous releases will recognize a sure hand; an artistic confidence that could take the listener in any direction, at any given moment…

Reviews so far:

The music is graceful, the mood dream-like, and the tempos slow and ponderous—a combination conducive to meditation, reflection, and mental drift that proves potent, no matter the precise nature of one's religious orientation. - Textura

Returning to the Scissors and Sellotape alias he used for a Cotton Goods release in 2009, we find him at his most layered, fragile state, arranging gossamer piano motifs over crumbling bass sounds and spacious field recordings, all with a meticulously nimble feel for texture and atmosphere. - Boomkat

The religious imagery that adorns every last centimetre of the packaging is rendered as haunting, ethereal, almost chilling. Take the ghoulish re-imagining of nuns as ghosts gazing into a black mirror on the front cover, or as hovering, sinisterly smiling figures waiting to prey on the weakness and submission of others. - Igloo Magazine

This is truly a special edition of one of the most beautiful albums you are likely to hear from one of the most finely curated labels in existence today. Lets hope we see a lot more from this label. - Experimedia

For the Tired and Ill at Ease comes wrapped in the grand reverb of St Mary’s Church in Thornbury – the intimacy arrives as an embrace from all sides, with an emotional immediacy of soft notes and pedal clunks neatly juxtaposed with a sense of time blurred and distorted by the washes of echo. - ATTN Magazine

Falling between the modern minimal tinkly likes of Nils Frahm and Olafur Arnalds and the more composed ambient/drone types like Stars Of The Lid or A Winged Victory For The Sullen. - Norman Records

Crackle and hum find their places in the pews; whispers rise like entreated prayers. - A Closer Listen

This album simply discovered me. All of its little quirks (the glitching on here is tastefully done) simply work towards making an emotional, dramatic statement. “For the Tired and Ill at Ease” is an instantly enjoyable, emotional, and oftentimes physical album. - Beach Sloth

A beautiful, haunting album of elegant minimal piano melodies. - Morpheus Music

Fitting fine inbetween recent projects of people like Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Clem Leek. - Ambient Blog

Music that has it's own fluorescence which is not visible to the human eye, but always favorable for ours souls. - Blear Moon

The listener could easily lay their own emotional interpretation over these gentle soundscapes - extremely fitting and complementary to the album’s backstory. - Binge Cringe Winge

The music remains a maddening beauty; subtly inhabited sounds, strings and melancholic meditation. - Autres Directions

This ambient composition weaves a delicate work of subtle melodies, voices, whispers evocative of nostalgia and beauty. - Loop </description>

Earlier this year we released Un Diable Sur Le Tympan - Live at Saint Merry Church. The album was made available as a free download that included a thirteen minute film "They Never Adopted The Name For Themselves", along with a gorgeous drawing by Alice Lewis and PDF photo booklet containing images from Jayne Amara Ross. This new film by Pamela Maddaleno is a fifteen minute session taken from the 'Un Diable Sur Le Tympan' release with extracts from each performance.

"I decided to publish a little musical film about a wonderful night I shot in Paris called "Un Diable sur le Tympan" live at Eglise Saint Merry to honour the great musician Frédéric D. Oberland and his guests Sacha Gattino, Christelle Lassort, Gaspar Claus, Berangere Maximin, Alice Lewis, filmaker and poet Jayne Amara Ross, photographer Stéphane C, Maxime Champesme and Collectif Sin." - Pamela Maddaleno
